Laser scanning or a panoramic tour: comparing features, handover and total cost of ownership

Two demonstrations on a laptop can look equally convincing: the visitor looks around and moves between rooms. The difference becomes apparent later. One client needs an overview of the floors, another needs to replace a few panoramas after renovation, and a third needs to hand over a working product to their own administrator. Pro3D is a software developer; laser scanning is a method of capturing data about a property.

Three different handover outcomes
Public link → check that the tour can be viewed
Complete package → check that it runs
Source materials → check that they can be edited

Illustrative diagram. The exact deliverables are agreed in the project brief.

When choosing between a 3D tour based on laser scanning data and a panoramic tour, you should therefore look beyond the impression made by a single screen. Compare the features, delivery arrangements and costs over the entire planned period of use. For a company with properties in several cities across Russia and the CIS, that last point often matters more than an impressive transition between rooms.

What exactly are we comparing?

Pro3D is a developer of Russian software that includes a capture app, an assembly engine, a player and an editing dashboard. Its website lists a spatial model, floor plans, measurements, tags, media, shared viewing and analytics. These are advertised capabilities; the scope of a particular order and the capture devices to be used need to be agreed. Pro3D overview.

Here, a panoramic tour means a project built from linked spherical photographs in a chosen editor. This is a category of solutions, rather than a single platform. The capabilities depend on the software, interface and service provider’s work. For example, Pano2VR exports web project files for hosting on the client’s server. Pano2VR Web Output.

Laser scanning is a method of capturing data, while a panoramic tour is a format for exploring a space. Here we compare the viewing experience and handover options, using features of software developed by Pro3D as a specific example. A panoramic tour cannot be promised to support every button, resolution or offline capability in advance. You need to review a specific example and the agreed deliverables. Software developed by Pro3D should also be assessed through a demonstration of the features you need, rather than a single attractive screen.

When a spatial model is useful

Software developed by Pro3D is worth considering when visitors need to understand how rooms, floors and passageways connect. A model overview helps explain a complex layout, while the walkthrough lets visitors explore a particular area. This approach suits a large office, a country house or a showroom with several zones.

The quality of the route still needs separate attention. A spatial model will not fix a poorly chosen starting view, a closed door or a long route to the main room. The demonstration should test the intended visitor experience: can visitors quickly find the kitchen, the second floor, a separate entrance or the room they want to see?

A panoramic tour is suitable when the visual quality of selected viewpoints, a clear menu and control over how the tour is built matter most. In a restaurant, viewers can be taken straight to the banquet hall; in a hotel, each room category can have its own route. An additional floor plan is useful here too, but its source and accuracy are agreed separately.

Neither format establishes dimensions on its own. If the results will be used to plan a renovation or order furniture, the measurement requirements must be specified separately. The term “digital twin” alone is not enough.

Questions to ask before commissioning a tour

Criteria 3D tour based on laser scanning data
Software developed by Pro3D
Panoramic project delivered with web files
Spatial geometry The platform advertises a model; results depend on data capture May be absent or added separately
Navigation Check the capabilities of the specific tour Check the editor and the agreed interface
Website integration Link or supported embedding method The completed package can be self-hosted
Technical deliverables Available depending on the brief and source data Commissioned separately if needed
Handover Pro3D states that a complete tour can be exported to your own server Files, the project and licences are handed over as agreed in the contract
Updates Distinguish between editing tags and changes to the space itself Terms for replacing viewpoints and rebuilding the tour are agreed
Ongoing costs Hosting, features, maintenance and changes Server, support, changes and required licences

The table shows where a standard capability involves additional work. For example, self-hosting gives you control over the server, but also makes you responsible for maintaining it. This applies to any web project that supports self-hosting.

A complete tour and engineering files are different deliverables

On its hosting page, Pro3D explicitly states that a complete tour can be exported to the customer's server with menus, tags and contact details retained, and that it can work both online and offline. Pricing depends on the size of the tour. This should be distinguished from receiving only a point cloud or a drawing. Pro3D hosting: export questions answered.

If a provider offers an “export”, ask a simple question: what exactly will open after handover? A point cloud in engineering software, a new panoramic route, a video or the original viewer with the agreed features? Ask for a sample file and test it on the intended device. Without this check, the same word can refer to very different products.

Pro3D lists E57, DWG and BIM among its technical deliverables, but notes that availability depends on the brief and source data. A format appearing on the list does not mean it is automatically included with every DIY tour created using a phone. Check the specific capture, the processing included and whether the result is suitable for the recipient's software. Pro3D interior scanning.

Handover should allow for a change of provider

You can host the project with the provider for a clearly defined service period or receive a package to host locally. The first option requires clear renewal and exit terms; the second requires a staff member to manage the server, access permissions and backups. The personal email account of a marketing employee who has left the company is a weak foundation for a digital archive intended to last for years.

A panoramic project carries a similar risk in a different form. A folder containing the finished website may work, but without the original photographs, project file and components used, updating it will require reconstructing the build. The handover should therefore include an inventory of materials, the editor version and an explanation of licensing dependencies.

For any tour, it is useful to keep a separate record of which rooms are shown, which version is current, where the source files are stored and who can change the contact details. This simple administrative step saves time when staff change or the website moves.

How to assess the total cost of ownership

Compare costs over the same period—for example, the period during which the premises will be rented out or used. Add up capture, tour production, hosting, maintenance and anticipated changes. Check whether additional files, a return site visit, another interface language and help with a website move are included.

Basic support is sufficient for a single property that stays unchanged. A retail chain that regularly updates its displays needs a different arrangement: how many locations will change, how often, who will approve each new version and whether the old version can be archived. A one-off price without these details says little about the future budget.

Do not assume that running your own server is free. It must be paid for, updated and checked. With platform hosting, the service handles some of this work, but you become dependent on the platform account and renewal terms. The choice depends on how much responsibility your company is prepared to take on.

Testing for Russia and the CIS

Testing should go beyond opening a link on the provider's connection. Specify your audience's cities, mobile networks, office network restrictions and browsers. Ask for the same route to be tested under these conditions, including loading, full-screen mode and the enquiry button.

On its Russian hosting page, Pro3D describes embedding via an iframe or HTML block, provided the website supports that format. For migrating an existing project, it recommends checking the source data; universal compatibility is not promised. Pro3D hosting and migration.

If the main use will be at an exhibition or in a meeting room without a reliable connection, specify this before capture. An offline package should be tested for acceptance on the intended device with the internet disconnected, rather than judged from a screenshot of a working browser. A trial viewing from Minsk or Almaty is more useful than a general promise that it “works everywhere”.

Essential handover checklist

Before signing the order, agree on seven points: account ownership; hosting address and duration; the files to be handed over; materials for editing; licences and usage rights; the update process; and the procedure for transferring the project to another provider. Include a working sample of the deliverable and contact details for the person responsible for support.

Questions and Answers

How does a tour with a spatial model differ from moving between panoramas?

Transitions connect images captured from individual viewpoints. A spatial model also helps show how rooms relate to one another. The practical difference is best tested using the same property: assess how easy it is to understand the entrances, floors and desired route, as well as how impressive the opening screen looks.

What costs should I consider beyond the initial capture?

Compare hosting over the same period, updates after changes to the property, preparation of additional files and project handover. Ask separately about the cost of an offline package if you need one. An inexpensive initial tour link may be suitable, but compare what it includes with the same set of services in the other proposal.

How can I clarify exactly what the website owner will receive?

Distinguish between the options: embedding a hosted tour, receiving a complete package you can run yourself, and receiving materials for future editing. Each offers a different level of control. Ask to see an example of the package you need and test it on your website; the word “export” alone does not describe everything included.

What should you check when changing service providers or when a property changes ownership?

Prepare a handover document listing the tour URL, the responsible party, access permissions, the materials received and the renewal process. Clarify who can edit the result and whether the public link will remain active. Being able to view the tour does not necessarily mean you can continue working with the original project.

Next step

This document helps you make a decision without debating the “best technology”. For an initial budget estimate, use the 360° Space calculator. You can attach the handover document to your enquiry and request two versions of an interactive tour: a 3D tour based on laser scan data and a panoramic tour, both with the same presentation and handover requirements. Your comparison will then focus on your needs, rather than just the format’s name.
